This is What Hanoi Looks Like at Night

This one is an evening stroll through Hanoi with no set destination, just the glow of storefronts and cafés, the constant flow of scooters and pedestrians, and the everyday life of the Old Quarter as the city comes alive after dark.

The route winds through the Old Quarter past St. Joseph’s Cathedral and along Hoan Kiem Lake. (The lake gets its own full episode later.)

What stood out most was how many people were out and about, just enjoying themselves: families, couples, groups of friends, and plenty of travelers soaking it in like I was. The streets feel alive in a way that’s hard to capture during the day.

My tip: be observant. Between the scooters and the other walkers, there’s a lot going on around you, so keep your head up, move steadily when you cross the street, and keep an eye on your belongings in the busier spots.

Every big city in Southeast Asia has its own feel after dark, and Hanoi’s is one of a kind.
