Vietnam’s Most Popular Night Market Gets Packed Every Weekend

Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening, several streets in Hanoi’s Old Quarter close to traffic and turn into the weekend night market, one of the city’s most popular attractions for locals and visitors alike. In this episode I walk it from the far end for nearly 3 kilometers, all the way to Hoan Kiem Lake.

I went in the early evening to stay ahead of the bigger crowds. It’s busiest on Saturday evenings, roughly 8:00 to 10:00 PM.

You’ll find a little of everything: inexpensive souvenirs, clothing, handbags, artwork, accessories and local crafts. Bargaining is common, especially if you’re buying several things. Just keep it polite and negotiate with a smile.

The food is one of the biggest draws. Even if you aren’t hungry, the smells alone make wandering through part of the experience. This was a walking trip for me, so I didn’t stop to eat, but I’d come hungry next time.

It isn’t just for tourists. It’s a popular weekend outing for Hanoi residents too: kids playing, couples out for an evening walk, and groups of friends enjoying the cooler temperatures after sunset. There’s live entertainment along the way as well.

One practical tip: there are a lot of people in close quarters, which makes it a prime spot for pickpockets. Keep your phone and wallet secure and stay alert.
