What’s Special About Hoan Kiem Lake? You’ll Find Out in This Video

Hoan Kiem Lake is the heart of Hanoi, right at the edge of the Old Quarter, and a walk around it is one of the best ways to feel the city. This episode loops the lake from afternoon into evening, as the lights come on.

What makes it special to me is the way tourists and locals all come together here. My girlfriend and I took an easy stroll starting in the late afternoon, while all around us people were jogging and older folks were practicing tai chi. I really appreciate how cities in Vietnam come to life after dark, once it’s a bit cooler outside.

The shoreline promenade is full of people walking, families and friends out together, and red flags along the water. As it gets dark, the lights reflect on the lake and the Old Quarter streets just beyond come alive.

My tip: there’s no special trick here. Go in the late afternoon or early evening, slow down, and just take everything in.
