4 Batu Caves Tips You Need to Know!

Batu Caves is a short drive outside Kuala Lumpur and one of the most famous sights in Malaysia: a Hindu temple complex inside limestone caves, reached by a long, colorful staircase. Here’s what to expect, plus four tips to help you enjoy it more.

My friend Shum drove me there. It’s nice having a friend who’s local.

Tip 1: It’s free. Both the temple and the caves are free to enter. If someone is asking you for money to go in, it’s most likely a scam. I didn’t run into this myself, but a longtime local gave me the heads-up, so I’m passing it along.

Tip 2: Go well rested. The stairs may look worse than they are, but you’ll enjoy them a lot more after a good night’s sleep. As travelers, we tend to overdo it and cram too much into our schedules. I knew there were a ton of stairs before I showed up, and I still got in there and thought, what did I get myself into? Apparently, leg day.

Tip 3: Plan your footwear. No matter the weather, water will be coming down the mountain. This isn’t the time to break out your new sneakers for an Instagram shoot on the stairs.

Tip 4: Stay hydrated and bring a small towel. You’re visiting a damp cave in Malaysia. It’s going to be muggy. Otherwise you might look like you went for a swim.

The monkeys. Inside, the cave is beautiful, and on the way you’ll pass through the monkey zone. I watched a full-on coconut battle between them. Most are pretty outgoing; one was a little camera shy. Keep a hand on your things.

What to wear: dress comfortably. It can be hot, and there are a lot of stairs.
