What’s Inside KL Tower? See the Amazing Views!

KL Tower (Menara Kuala Lumpur) gives you one of the best views of the city, and on a weekday it’s an easy visit. You can buy tickets online on the official website or, like I did on a weekday, at the tower itself; the line wasn’t bad at all.

Tickets were around $20 when I went, though prices may have changed since. I spent about 30 minutes up top, which was plenty.

The Sky Deck. This is the open-air deck at the very top of the tower. You’re exposed to the elements, so if you burn easily, wear sunscreen or a cap. The views are worth it; it gives you a real sense of just how big Kuala Lumpur is. The tower stands 421 meters tall.

The Observation Deck. Below the Sky Deck, this one is enclosed, out of the weather and, more importantly, air-conditioned. From here you can see Merdeka 118, the second-tallest building in the world. It wasn’t open for public tours when I visited.

A few fun details: there’s a Camel sign on a building far below, and whoever came up with that idea deserves a raise, because every tourist, me included, was drawn to it and took pictures. There’s also an exhibit comparing towers around the world. My takeaway: it’s a tough business, because whatever you build, the next guy uses as his starting point.

The revolving restaurant was closed while I was there. At ground level there are plenty of small shops for souvenirs, snacks and drinks before you head to your next stop.

My tip: if your schedule allows, go right before sunset so you get both daylight and night views of the skyline. The same trick works for the Petronas Towers.

KL Tower or the Petronas Towers? Both are worth doing, but if you only have time for one, I’d pick the Petronas Towers, simply because there’s more worth doing around them: Suria KLCC, the food court and KLCC Park are all right there.
