The Last Tin Dredge in Malaysia – Is It Worth Visiting?

This floating machine helped build modern Malaysia, and today it sits in silence. Tanjung Tualang Tin Dredge No. 5 is the last tin dredge in the country. The question is, is it actually worth visiting?

Getting there and tickets. The dredge sits in a rural area about a 35-minute drive outside Ipoh. Admission was 38 ringgit per person when we visited in late 2025, the same price for tourists and locals. Check current prices before you go. There’s plenty of parking on site.

The museum. Near the entrance, a small museum covers the history of the dredge and early tin mining in Malaysia, plus some interesting facts about the area. It only takes a few minutes and is a great primer before the main event.

Dredge No. 5. This steam-powered bucket-line dredge floats on a man-made pond and operated from 1938 to 1963. It dug tin ore out of the earth and processed it all on board. It wasn’t just a machine; it was a floating factory. The tour is self-guided, with clear signage and scannable QR codes for more information. It wasn’t crowded at all. We were the only people on the dredge, which made it a very memorable experience.

What to know.

• Time: allow about 90 minutes to explore the whole dredge, plus another hour for the maze park, which is included in admission.
• Heat: the interior is shaded but there’s no air conditioning, so avoid the midday heat.
• Climbing: to explore everything, you’ll harness up and climb ladders. Being able to access so much of the dredge is what makes it unique.

Is it worth it? If you have any mobility issues, I’d pass. If you’re short on time or don’t have access to a car, it’s probably a pass too. For me, it isn’t a must-do, but it’s a unique and worthwhile stop for anyone even slightly interested in mining history.
