Skip the Tourist Markets — This is Where Bangkok Actually Shops

Bangkok has no shortage of night markets, and most of them sell the same things: the same shirts, the same magnets. You get the idea. The Train Night Market Srinakarin is different.

A little history. Known locally as Talad Rot Fai, which translates to “train market,” it got its name from its original location next to the railroad tracks near Chatuchak. In 2013, the BTS expansion forced it to move to its current home behind Seacon Square. It’s a bit of a haul from central Bangkok, but most people who make the trip say it’s worth it.

When to go. The market runs Thursday through Saturday, from around sunset until midnight. Show up too early and a lot of stalls won’t be open yet. We arrived around 5 p.m., and some vendors still weren’t set up. This place hits its stride after dark.

What you’ll find. It’s noticeably more local than some of Bangkok’s other markets; you won’t be fighting through tour groups. It’s split into three sections: everyday goods and food stalls, modern fashion, and the part most people come for, the vintage and antique zone, where you’ll find things you won’t find anywhere else in Thailand. The entrance has a row of open-air bars with live bands if you just want to grab a beer and take it all in.

We had a good dinner there, though I honestly forget what we ate. It’s a fun, easy evening out.

My tip: don’t arrive too early. Come after dark, when the whole market is open and the bands are playing. I’m still comparing Bangkok’s markets and plan to film plenty more, so stay tuned.
